A glass town, and the houses show it
Stourbridge and the villages around it were the centre of English glassmaking from the seventeenth century onwards — the local fireclay made pots that could take the heat, and the cones that came with the industry still stand at Wordsley and Amblecote. None of that is our doing and we make nothing ourselves. It matters for a practical reason: in a town where glass was the trade, a great deal of it ended up in the buildings. Coloured margin lights, etched and acid-worked panels, cut and bevelled glass in front doors and fanlights turn up here in ordinary terraced houses, not just in the big ones.
Most of it can be kept
The assumption when a decorative panel cracks is that it has to come out for plain glass. Usually it does not. Leaded panels can be remade to the same pattern, coloured glass can be matched, and a bevelled or etched panel can often be reproduced closely enough that nobody looking at the door would know. Where the original panel is sound but the frame around it has gone, the panel can frequently be saved and reset. Send a photo of the damaged panel and one of an undamaged one beside it and we will tell you honestly what can be matched and what cannot.
Old glass in a modern unit
If you want the look of the original but the performance of double glazing, a decorative or leaded panel can be encapsulated — built into a sealed unit so the pattern sits protected between two panes. It keeps the appearance from the street, it is easier to clean, and it stops draughts through the leadwork. It is not right for every house and we will say so where it is not.
The ordinary work as well
Alongside all that, Stourbridge has the same misted units, broken panes, failed hinges and sticking doors as anywhere else, and that is most of what we do here. A decorative panel does not have to be involved for it to be worth ringing.
Common questions
My front door has coloured leaded glass and one piece is cracked. Do I lose the whole panel?
Usually not. A leaded panel can often be repaired in place by replacing the damaged piece, or remade to the same pattern if it is beyond that. A photo tells us which.
Can old decorative glass be double glazed?
Yes, by encapsulating it — the panel is built into a sealed unit so it sits between two panes. You keep the look and gain the insulation. It suits some houses better than others.
