Very little round here is perfectly square
Dudley sits over limestone and old workings, and between that and a century and a half of settlement a good deal of the older housing has shifted slightly. It is rarely anything to worry about structurally, but it shows up in the windows: openings that are a few millimetres wider at the top than the bottom, frames that are marginally out of true, sashes that catch on one side only. For glazing it matters because a sealed unit is made to the size it is ordered at and has no give in it. An opening that is out of square has to be measured properly rather than measured once and doubled up, or the unit either will not go in or goes in under stress and fails early.
Doors and windows that have started to catch
The usual first sign is a door or a window that used to shut with a push and now needs a lift, or a handle that has to be pulled towards you before it will turn. On a uPVC door that is normally hinge adjustment and a worn mechanism rather than the door itself, and it is a small job. On an older timber window it is more often the frame having taken up moisture or moved a fraction. Either way it is worth looking at before anyone talks about replacing anything.
Misted and blown units
The commonest call. The seal round the double glazed unit fails, damp air gets into the gap between the panes and condensation forms where no cloth will reach. The frame stays where it is and only the glass unit is changed — a fraction of the cost of a new window and nothing to make good afterwards.
Broken glass, made safe first
Whether it is a stone off a mower, a break-in or a toughened pane letting go on its own, the order is the same: clear the glass out of the frame, make the opening secure, then measure and replace once the right glass is in. Boarding where it cannot go straight back.

Almost always, yes. It is common in older property round here and it is exactly why we measure the opening properly rather than assuming. It occasionally means the beading needs a little work, which we do at the same time.
