Cracked, chipped or gone completely
A crack that runs corner to corner will not stop there — glass keeps moving with temperature, and a hairline this month is a hole by Christmas. A chipped edge is the same story more slowly. If the pane has already gone, and the opening is not secure, that is a job for our emergency glazing instead: we make it safe first and sort the glass afterwards.
Single glazing is usually the quick one
It matters a great deal what has broken. A single pane — an older timber window, a shed or garage, a greenhouse, an internal door, a porch — is cut from stock glass, so it can often be measured and fitted on the same visit. That is the best case and it is a common one.
A sealed unit cannot have one pane swapped
This is the thing most people are surprised by, so it is worth saying plainly. A double glazed sealed unit is two panes bonded either side of a spacer bar, sealed as one item. If one side breaks, the whole unit is replaced — there is no way to take out just the broken pane and leave the other. The unit is made to your exact measurements, so there is a wait while it is manufactured, and we fit it once it arrives.
What decides the price
Size, the type of glass, and whether it is single or a sealed unit. Toughened costs more than ordinary glass, a large pane more than a small one, and a made-to-size sealed unit more than a pane cut from stock. We measure and tell you the figure before anything is ordered — no work starts on a number you have not agreed.
Where toughened glass is not optional
In some places the glass has to be toughened by law, not by preference: doors and the panels beside them, anything low down in a window, bathrooms, and glass near the floor. If the pane that has broken is in one of those positions it is replaced with toughened, and it will carry a small permanent stamp in the corner saying so. It is worth knowing before you compare quotes, because it is not something to leave out.

Common questions
Can you replace just the broken pane of a double glazed window?
No — and nobody can. A sealed unit is two panes bonded to a spacer bar and sealed as a single item, so it comes out and goes back as one piece. If a quote offers to swap one pane of a sealed unit, something has been misunderstood.
My window is cracked but not broken through. Can it wait?
It can, but it will not get better. Glass keeps moving, and a crack spreads. There is no rush to the same afternoon, but it is worth getting measured rather than waiting for it to fail on a cold night.
How long does it take?
A single pane can often be done on the visit, because it is cut from stock. A sealed unit has to be made to your exact size first, so we measure, order it and come back to fit it. We will tell you which yours is when we look at it.
Is the broken glass taken away?
Yes. Every piece goes with us, including whatever has ended up in the garden or the carpet. You should not be sweeping up after us.
Do you replace glass in doors as well as windows?
Yes — front doors, back doors, patio doors, and the fixed panels beside them. Door glass usually has to be toughened, which we would fit as a matter of course.
What if it has been broken into?
