If it cracked and stayed in one piece, it is not toughened

Worth knowing, because it answers a question people often ask. Toughened glass does not crack and hold. When it fails it fails completely and instantly, crazing into thousands of blunt granules across the whole pane at once — you cannot have a single crack across a toughened pane. So a window with one crack running through it is annealed glass, the ordinary kind. That matters where the pane sits: if it is in a door, in a panel beside a door, or low enough to be walked into, the Building Regulations require safety glass there and the pane that has just cracked was not it. Putting like for like back would repeat somebody else's mistake.

Decorative panels can usually be saved

Where the break is in a leaded or coloured panel the whole thing rarely has to go. An individual piece within the leadwork can often be replaced, and where the panel is beyond that it can be remade to the same pattern. Send a photo of the damage and one of an intact panel next to it.

Two different jobs on the day. A crack that is holding can wait for the right glass. A hole in the window cannot, so the first visit clears the opening and boards it so the house is secure until the replacement is ready.
