A door that won't lock usually isn't the lock
In the town that made locks it feels wrong to say it, but most of these calls turn out to be the mechanism inside the door rather than the lock barrel, or the door itself having dropped a few millimetres so the catches no longer meet the keeps. The tell is a door that locks fine in summer and needs a shoulder in November, or one you have to pull towards you before the key will turn. That's an adjustment or a new gearbox, not a new door. Handles that turn without doing anything are usually a broken spindle or a worn mechanism.
Terraces that open straight onto the pavement
A lot of the older streets here have no side entry and no front garden, so the front door opens onto the footway and the only way in with a sheet of glass is through it. That's fine, it just needs planning — we carry glass in cut to size rather than cutting on site, we put boards down, and we work out where the van can sit before the day rather than on it. Misted units out at New Invention and Short Heath
The estate housing on the edges of Willenhall is mostly on its first or second set of sealed units, and those are the ones misting up now. The frame stays where it is; only the glass unit inside it is changed. It's a fraction of the cost of a new window and takes an hour or so once the glass is in.
Older windows worth keeping
Some of the Victorian stock around the centre still has original timber windows, and a lot of those are better made than what would replace them. Where the frame is sound, glass can be re-puttied or re-glazed in place rather than the whole window coming out — that includes leaded and patterned panes. Where the timber has really gone we'll say so.
Common questions
My front door won't lock properly. Is that something a glazier does?
Yes. Locks, handles, hinges and the mechanism inside a uPVC or composite door are all part of the job, and they're some of the most common calls we get in Willenhall. It's usually an adjustment or a replacement mechanism rather than a new door.
Can you replace the glass in an old timber window without replacing the frame?
Usually, yes. If the timber is sound the glass can be taken out and a new pane bedded and puttied in, which keeps the original window. We'll tell you honestly if the frame is too far gone to be worth it.
