The workshop behind the house
Cradley Heath was built on chain and anchor making, and for a long time much of that work happened at home — a small chainshop in the back yard behind the terrace, worked by the family. Broken glass in a garage, a workshop or a store is normal work and worth ringing about even for one pane. On an outbuilding the priority is often making it secure rather than making it pretty — it is generally the contents people are worried about, not the window.

The terraces themselves have the same problems as anywhere: units that have blown, hinges that have dropped, locks that need lifting and shoving, panes that have gone. All of it is repairable without replacing the window.

Can you reglaze a steel-framed window rather than replace it?
Usually, yes. Steel windows are normally glazed into putty or held with clips, and a broken pane can be taken out and a new one bedded in without the frame coming out. It keeps the slim look, which a plastic replacement will not.
