In Walsall you cannot assume what the glass is

What goes back in is not a free choice. Glass in a door, in the panel beside a door, in a low window or anywhere it could be walked into has to be safety glass under the Building Regulations, and that is toughened or laminated rather than ordinary annealed glass. Existing toughened panes carry a small etched stamp in a corner. Getting this identified at the measuring stage is the whole job — the wrong specification is not a saving, it is a window that has to come out again.
Cracked now, or open to the weather
A crack that is holding can usually wait for the right glass to be ordered, and it is worth waiting rather than putting something temporary in. A pane that has gone through cannot wait, and the first job is making the opening safe — clearing the glass out of the frame and boarding it where the replacement cannot go straight in. No, and it is worth understanding why. A sealed unit is two panes bonded either side of a spacer bar and sealed as one article — there is no way to separate them in the window. The unit is replaced as a whole, which is still a much smaller job than a new window.
